Statistical rules to be champion
By admin | December 26, 2009
If one leans a little on the history of the championship of League 1, one realizes that there are certain statistical rules to respect to become champion of France or for at least finishing on the podium.
To gain + victories that others?
Yes, indeed, the figures prove it. Over the 25 last seasons, the champion team was always that having obtained the most victories. Still more impressive, 23 times over the 25 last seasons, the 2 teams having respectively obtained the most victories finished 1st and 2nd championship (either 92% of time). Teams having currently the most victories: OL, PSG (16 victories) Bordeaux, Marseilles (15 goals)
To obtain less defeats than the others?
Not, not really. Over the 25 last seasons, the team having obtained less defeats
finished champion only 17 times out of 25 (either 68% of time) and only 13 times over the 25 last seasons, the 2 teams having obtained less defeats finished in the first 2 places (or 52% of time). To obtain less defeats is thus not a pledge of success. Teams having currently less defeats: Rennes (3) OM (4)
To have the best attack?
Yes indeed, since the team having finished with the best attack was crowned champion 13 times over the 14 last seasons (that is to say 92% of time) (and in the worst case 2nd in 2002/2003) or 17 times over the 19 last seasons.
Another stat incredible: the team having finished with the best attack of the championship finished forever beyond the 3rd place over the 32 last seasons. It is also noted that the 2 teams having finished with the best attack finished in the first 2 places 8 times over the 10 last seasons and at least in the first 3 places 17 times over the 20 last seasons. Better current attacks of L1: Bordeaux (47 goals), Marseilles (45 goals)
To have best defense?
Not, at all. The team with best defense was champion only 3 times over the 10 last seasons. The 2 teams having best defenses finished to the first 2 place only 3 times over the 20 last seasons and in the 3 first that 7 times over the 20 last seasons. Like what, the best of defenses, that remains the attack. Better current defenses of L1: Rennes (19 boxed goals), Toulouse and OL ex-aequo (21 goals)
To have best Goal Average?
The team having best Goal Average finished champion 17 times over the 19 last seasons. The 2 teams with best Goal Average finished in the 3 first 17 times out of the 19 dernères seasons and in the 2 first 12 times over the 19 last seasons. Teams having currently best Goal Average: OM (+19) Bordeaux (+18)
The attack pays better than defense!
Statistics illustrated well this matter, it is of the average position according to the attack or defense. For example, over the 32 last seasons of L1, the team having the best attack finished on average with the 1.1e place, the 2nd best attack finished with the 2.6e place and the 3rd attack finished with the 4.9e place. On the other hand, the team having best defense finished on average with the 3.15e place, the 2nd defense finished with the 3.5e place and the 3rd defense finished with the 5.3e place.
Pre-necessary to be champion
If one takes again the 30 last seasons of League 1
Never a team was champion with less than 19 victories. 29 times over the 30 last seasons, the champion team gained at least 20 victories (either 96%)
Never a team was champion without registering a minimum of 53 goals in the season.
Never a team was champion while boxing more than 41 goals in the season.
Never a team was champion with Goal Average lower than + 21.
The best striker of the team always registered 11 goals at least
The 2nd best striker of the team always registered 8 goals at least
The 3rd best striker of the team always registered 6 goals at least
The 4th best striker of the team always registered 4 goals at least
The total of the 2 best strikers of the team always reached a total of 21 goals
The total of the 3 best strikers of the team always reached a total of 28 goals
The total of the 4 best strikers of the team always reached a total of 33 goals
The total of the last 2 strikers of the quartet always reached a total of 11 goals
The total of the last 3 strikers of the quartet always reached a total of 20 goals
the last 2 strikers: 11 goals
the last 3 strikers: 20 goals
28 times over the 30 last seasons, the best striker of the champion team always marked 13 goals at least
26 times over the 30 last seasons, the 2nd best striker of the champion team marked at least 10 goals.
No team could be champion without a pair of strikers to less than 11 goals and 10 minimum goals (26 times over the 30 last seasons, either 86% of time) or without a pair of strikers to less than 13 goals for the 1st striker and 8 minimum goals for the 2nd striker of the team (4 times over the 30 last seasons, or 13% of time)
28 times over 30 seasons, the 3rd best striker of the champion team marked 7 goals at least (either 93%)
28 times over the 30 last seasons, the 4th best striker of the team marked 5 goals at least.
* The 2 only times where the 4th best striker finished with less than 5 goals, the 3 other strikers were each one with more than 10 goals (In 2004: Luyindula 16, Elber 10 and Juninho 10 and in 1984: Lacombe 18, Giresse 16 and Muller 14). It is thus the exception which confirms the rule. To finish champion, you need 4 players with more than 5 goals.
The total of the 4 best strikers of the team must correspond at least to 55.4% and the maximum to 83.9% of all the goals registered by the team.
Who can be champion? By taking into account these stats, one can already eliminate certain teams in the luttre for the title. Like Rennes for example which, with 32 goals, is well far from the bar of the 53 necessary minimum goals. Moreover, with less than one Rennes miracle will not count 2 strikers with 11 and 10 goals or 13 and 8 goals. Without forgetting that Rennes counts only 11 victories whereas it is necessary some at least 19 or 20 to be champion. What means that Rennes should gain these the last 9 matches… Ca would be more than one miracle especially with the recent wound of Briand.
One can also eliminate Toulouse which counts only 37 goals and whose 2nd best marker of the team is only with 3 goals. Gignac marks 72% of the goals of the offensive quartet and never a champion did not have such a percentage of dependence on his best striker. Moreover, Toulouse is engaged in Coupe de France and has a difficult calendar.
One can also put certain questions about Lyon which marked only 38 goals and which, except Benzema does not count any striker with more than 5 goals. Moreover, the calendar of Lyon is rather complicated with 3 large matches against Bordeaux, the OM and Toulouse.
Lille has nothing any more but the championship to play and a rather favorable calendar. The LOSC has also a good attack but account an unequal distribution of the strikers with one 3rd and one 4th striker not prolific enough. The title passes by goals of Hazard, Vittek and Cabaye.
With regard to the PSG has the worst GOAL Average and the worst defense of the applicants to the title, but these data are not eliminatory. Except a cut of the UEFA which will be able to pump energy to him, the PSG has a rather favorable calendar to come and still has the greatest number of victories as well as a very beautiful distribution of the strikers (15-8-5-5), a point which could make the difference in the final sprint.
Concerning the OM, in spite of the fact that the OM has the 2nd best attack, their best striker is only with 8 goals and the OM counts the offensive quartet least prolific of the 7 supposed applicants to the title. 24 goals only for Kone-Ben Arfa-Niang-Zenden. And then the OM has a rather delicate calendar to come with the Cut from the UEFA to be managed. Niang and Koné must plant if the OM wants to gain the title.
By taking into account all that, I really do not see who could prevent Bordeaux from gaining the title or to finish or less in the 2 first. Bordeaux has the best attack, one of best Goal Average, a good distribution of the mark among its offensive quartet and a really favorable calendar. Moreover, except the final of the Cut of the League against Valves, Bordeaux has nothing any more but the championship. Bordeaux is the team which corresponds best to the statistical rules which determine a champion.
One will see well. In any case, that the best gains!
