Gateway Football Weekly Notebook: Sept. 19
By admin | May 9, 2009
The SMS Bears will be looking to move to 4-0 for the
first time since 1989, but it will take a win at I-A Tulsa to stay perfect. The
Bears are 0-6 all-time against the Golden Hurricane. This season, the Gateway is
0-6 against I-A teams. The Gateway has 24 I-A wins since 1985, which includes at
least one I-A win every year since 1995.
Top Dogs — SIU Back to No. 1?
When Southern Illinois earned the No. 1 ranking (Sept. 6, 2004), the Salukis
joined UNI (1992), Western Illinois (2003) Western Kentucky (2002), and
Youngstown State (1997 and 1998) as Gateway teams that had reached that
pinnacle. Every Gateway school has been ranked No. 3 or better at one time in
their history, with Indiana State and Southern Illinois also achieving No. 1
rankings prior to Gateway membership. On Sept. 18, SIU’s 59-9 win against
William Penn, coupled by a loss by No. 1 Montana, will likely push the Salukis
back to No. 1 when polls are released Monday, Sept. 20.

Four Gateway Conference are ranked for the second-straight week, including
Southern Illinois, UNI, Western Kentucky and Western Illinois. The Salukis, who
achieved their first No. 1 ranking as a Gateway member last week, fell one spot
to No. 2 after falling 23-22 to I-A Northern Illinois last week.

Illinois, has lifted the Grizzlies to the No. 1 ranking in The Sports Network
Top 25 poll. The Grizzlies (2-0) have posted home wins over Maine and Hofstra
and moved up a spot in each of the first two polls. Montana, which won the
national championship in 1995 and 2001, last held the No. 1 ranking on November
11, 2002. The Grizzles captured 61 first-place votes and 2,492 points in this

Salukis Are No. 1 in the Nation
By admin | May 9, 2009
![]() |
Southern Illinois has become the fifth No. 1 team in Gateway history, and third different team in the past three years, as the Salukis are the top-ranked team in the Sports Network Top-25 poll, announced Monday.
It marks the first time SIU is ranked #1 in the nation since winning the National Championship in 1983. That season, Southern spent six weeks at the top spot.
Jerry Kill’s club, which was ranked No. 2 in the preseason, ascended to the top spot after it defeated Southeast Missouri, 42-3, and former No. 1 Delaware lost, 24-21, to unranked New Hampshire. The Salukis earned 56 first-place votes and 2,050 total points in this week’s balloting.
SIU joins former Gateway No. 1 teams (UNI, Western Illinois, Western Kentucky, and Youngstown State) as league teams to represent the conference at the top. Western Kentucky (2002) and Western Illinois (2003) have held the top spots during the past two seasons.
